"The Mirror Has Two Faces"

(by Debbie Seagle)

American Bryan Adams fans were treated this winter to a

new movie - The Mirror Has Two Faces - and the soundtrack

included a romantic duet by Bryan and the ever popular

Barbara Streisand. The song, "I Finally Found Someone",

was written by Bryan and the song also produced a music

video which featured clips from the production of the new

film, as well as glimpses of Bryan and Barbara hanging out

together. Still photos of these clips were used for the

CD single design.

The central characters in this story are played by Barbara

Streisand, Jeff Bridges, Mimi Rogers, Lauren Bacall and

Pierce Brosnan. Rose (Barbara Streisand) is a professor

of literature at Columbia University. She is brilliant

and passionate in her teaching abilities but is very plain

and understated in her appearance. In sharp contrast her

sister, played by Mimi Rogers, is glamorous and bubbly.

The two sisters are always being compared by their mother

(Lauren Bacall) who never misses an opportunity to point

out that Rose should be more like her sister. She is

encourage to "fix herself up" so she can meet a nice man

and settle down.

Enter Jeff Bridges, also a professor at Columbia university,

in the mathematics department. He is also brilliant, but

does not have the same style and finesse as Rose. He also

longs for companionship but becomes flustered when he is

around women he is sexually attracted to. This is demon-

strated in a scene from the movie where an old girlfriend

of his shows up unexpectedly at a lecture he is giving.

He stammers and stumbles, and is unable to conduct his

lecture.

Rose’s sister is newly married to the handsome Pierce Bros-

nan and she wants desperately for her sister to be as happy

as she is. She answers a personal ad for Rose, placed by

the math professor, and tells him all about her sister.

He agrees to check out Rose by attending one of her lectures.

When he sees her he is instantly taken with her intellect,

her way with her students, and the subject of romantic

literature which she is speaking about. Her lecture is very

moving and she asks the question, "Why do people want roman-

tic love?"

The couple get together for a date and they fall in love.

They begin a relationship without any sexual contact involved.

Eventually they decide to get married and again, the stipula-

tion is that there be no sexual relationship. He insists that

he wants her as his soul-mate only. Rose agrees and they are

married but she quickly becomes tired of the odd arrangement

and she decides to leave her husband. In his depression, he

decides to travel to Europe on an extended holiday.

While he is abroad, Rose decides to finally fix herself up and

begins working out, buying new clothes and doing her hair and

make-up differently. She begins to look so fabulous that her

new brother-in-law makes a pass at her. One of the most

poignant moments in the movie is when she tells her brother-

in-law, "I used to think you were too good for me, but now I

realize that I am too good for you." Clearly now she sees the

other face in her mirror - the glamorous and exciting Rose.

She reconciles with her mother for always criticizing her and

comparing her to her sister and the two become close.

Eventually Rose’s husband comes back to the States and is

flustered by her attractiveness. It is obvious that she is

still in love with him and the movie ends with a scene where

they meet and dance in the streets - a happy ending is implied.

It is at this part of the movie, with them embracing each other

that Bryan and Barbara can be heard singing "I Finally Found

Someone."

The movie was already in cinemas in the States on November 15th

and it will be in the European cinemas sometime in January 1997.
